Author, children’s advocate and educator Geoffrey Canada will visit BWH Friday, Feb. 11, as the keynote speaker of “A Celebration of the Legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,” from 2 to 3 p.m. in the Bornstein Amphitheater. All BWHers are invited to attend the event, which is hosted by Partners HealthCare, BWH, the Center for Community Health and Health Equity and the Center for Surgery and Public Health.
In his 20-plus years with Harlem Children’s Zone Inc., Canada has become nationally recognized for his pioneering work helping children and families in Harlem and as a passionate advocate for education reform. His work with Harlem Children’s Zone has become a national model and has been profiled by many media outlets, including “60 Minutes,” “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” “The Today Show,” The New York Times and USA Today. Canada is also featured prominently in the 2010 film “Waiting for Superman,” a powerful and alarming documentary about the current state of public education in the U.S.
Canada is a member of the board of directors of The After-School Corporation, a nonprofit organization that aims to expand educational opportunities for all students, and in 2005, was named one of “America’s Best Leaders” by U.S. News and World Report.
