Medical Assistant Delmira Cardoso
When patients seem apprehensive or nervous about a doctor’s appointment, Medical Assistant Nakema Howard is quick to help them feel safe and comfortable.
“Many times you can start with a smile—that helps a patient feel at ease,” said Howard, of the Brigham and Women’s Urogynecology Group. “My goal from the time I meet a patient is to ensure they leave their appointment satisfied about the service they have received.”
Howard is one the hundreds of medical assistants throughout BWH and the distributed campus who every day help outpatients feel comfortable during their visit. They also assist clinical staff in basic medical procedures.
BWH honors their contributions during National Medical Assistant Recognition Week, Oct. 17-21.

“I love being a medical assistant because it gives me an opportunity to connect with patients and help in any way I can to make them feel better,” said Medical Assistant Delmira Cardoso, who works at the Phyllis Jen Center for Primary Care.
The duties of a medical assistant are plentiful. They gather information to determine the reason for the patient’s visit and act as a liason between patient and physician. When they are not escorting patients into exam rooms, where they check their vital signs and perform other various tasks, they are preparing and maintaining examination rooms and taking inventory of supplies and equipment.
“By exemplifying the Patient First standards, our goal is to be knowledgeable and competent in our field. We show unwavering care and compassion when it comes to our patients,” said Howard.
