Fellowships and Awards
Established in 1996, the award is granted annually to two BWH-affiliated early-career underrepresented minority academicians (generally junior faculty or trainees). It is an unrestricted $150,000 award aimed to assist in career development and enhance faculty retention. Department Chairs nominate up to 2 individuals for consideration by a MFCDA Selection Committee. For more information, please contact the Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers (OMC) at bwhomc@partners.org or 617-525-7646.
Harvard Medical School Faculty are eligible for a range of Fellowships based on academic rank, career track and departmental affiliation.
Established in 1995 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the admission of women to HMS and to acknowledge the important contributions of women to the School. This Fellowship program was established to help junior faculty at the point in their careers when they must teach, do research, compete for grants, publish, or practice (if a clinical faculty member) at the same time they may be assuming increased family or other responsibilities. The program was renamed in 2004 to honor Doctors Eleanor and Miles Shore's efforts on behalf of the 50th Anniversary Program for Scholars in Medicine.
The awards may be used for "mini-sabbaticals" during which the scholar might "buy-out" of clinical responsibilities long enough to write a grant, finish critical research, develop new curriculum or prepare a manuscript. Or, awards may also be used to provide laboratory assistance at a time when a junior faculty member does not yet have independent funding.
Fellowships provide funding up to a maximum of $25,000.
Eligibility: M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree, appointment as Instructor or Assistant Professor in HMS or HSDM, and an established interest in an academic career.

The HMS Foundation Funds Program (formerly The HMS Red Book Program) is comprised of faculty fellowship opportunities by invitation only. The internal nomination process for these invitational awards is open to all eligible HMS faculty, including those at all HMS-affiliated institutions. Candidates must be nominated by their Department/Division Heads. Proposals are reviewed twice per year – in spring and fall – in NIH Study Section fashion by the Faculty Fellowship Committee. This committee matches applicants with particular fellowships to optimize the number of successful applications.
