Brigham and Women's Spine Center

Treatment for Spine Disorders

Brigham and Women’s spine care includes multidisciplinary treatment for spine conditions due to back pain, disease or injury, including disc herniation, disc disorders and degeneration, spinal stenosis, spinal and nerve tumors, and spinal deformity/scoliosis.

Nonsurgical Treatment for Spinal Disorders

At Brigham and Women's, our focus is delivering the right care, for the right patient, at the right time. Our team offers innovative nonsurgical solutions to patients as a first step. We frequently treat patients suffering from spinal disorders using conservative methods such as:

  • Physical therapy
  • Pain management and medication, e.g., nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and/or injections
  • Alternative therapies such as acupuncture and chiropractic care
  • Occupational therapy

In fact, between 70-90% of our patients with back pain do not require spine surgery.

Surgical Treatment for Spinal Disorders

If spine surgery is needed, we perform a complete range of surgical procedures including spinal decompression (discectomy or laminectomy), scoliosis treatment, spinal fusion, and spinal stenosis treatment. Our spine surgeons are expert at performing minimally invasive spine surgery, which uses smaller incisions and promotes faster recovery.

Brigham and Women’s spine care brings together neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons and specialists in pain medicine, physical medicine, neurology, rheumatology and rehabilitation to provide multidisciplinary spine treatment in a single location.
