The Women’s Sports Medicine Program offers comprehensive multidisciplinary care for female patients with musculoskeletal sports injuries. We are committed to providing the highest quality care to our patients, including competitive athletes, recreational athletes, and women who want to become more active.
Female athletes experience stress fractures, patellofemoral (knee) pain, and ACL injuries with significantly greater frequency than their male counterparts. The Female Athlete Triad, which encompasses three interrelated female health issues – eating disorder/low energy availability, altered menstruation, and osteoporosis – has been cited as a primary cause of these differences. However, it is believed that the reasons for disparities go far beyond the Triad. Differences in hip and knee structure and function, as well as hormonal differences, are also thought to increase the likelihood of certain injuries. Our Program uses evidence-based medicine to provide evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, management, and prevention services that are tailored to address these differences – for women of any activity level.
Key aspects of the Program include: focus on overall musculoskeletal health, with specialization in impactful life transitions such as pregnancy and menopause; stressing the relationship between maintaining physical activity and maintaining a good quality of life; ability to address sports-related issues in the context of other medical conditions; and commitment to research and training that focus on gender differences in musculoskeletal health.
