 Christiane Haeffele, MD's passion for global health arose out of working in Latin America for a year for an organization called International Service Learning, a program that helps to treat underserved populations in Costa Rica, Nicaragua and Panama. Dr. Haeffele served as a team leader, responsible for coordinating the logistics of the mission trips, functioning as part of a medical team, serving as a translator between patients and physicians and helping to set up temporary clinics and pharmacies in remote areas. It was through these experiences that Dr. Haeffele realized she would like to become part of the movement to make healthcare a right of citizenship.
Dr. Haeffele earned her BA in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of California at Berkeley in 2001 and her MD from Duke University in 2007. She is a first year resident in the Harvard Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston’s Children’s Hospital. Some of her research has included a geographic health study of a Nicaraguan community in San Jose, Costa Rica in an effort to determine if sources for common infectious disease can be identified and eliminated to improve the overall health of the community.
