What is hip replacement surgery?Find A Doctor »
Hip replacement surgery, or arthroplasty, is a surgery in which a damaged hip joint is replaced or restored in order to reduce pain, increase mobility, and improve the patient's quality of life. Surgery is may be recommended after the patient has tried various nonsurgical treatments, including anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, exercise and conditioning, pain medications, and viscosupplementation injections to add lubrication to the joint. Osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease, is the most common reason patients require hip replacement surgery.
Surgeons at BWH offer two categories of hip replacement surgery services:
- In total hip replacement surgery, the entire hip joint, including the ball and socket of the hip, are replaced with a prosthesis made of metal, polyethylene or ceramics.
- In partial hip replacement surgery, surgeons replace the hip socket with artificial materials but rather than replacing the ball portion of the femur, they resurface it with a hollow hemispherical cap to provide a smoother surface and enable easier movement.

Following replacement surgery, are encouraged to move the new joint, and work with a physical therapist to create an exercise program to build strength and improve range of motion.
