The Anatomic Pathology Division processes and analyzes diagnostic specimens, including samples obtained at surgery, biopsy or fine needle aspiration, for patients at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. In addition, the Anatomic Pathology faculty reviews diagnostic materials (primarily slides) obtained at other institutions for all patients who come to Brigham and Women's Hospital or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for a second opinion or for therapy. The Division also performs over 200 autopsies annually. Finally, our faculty provides consultative services to pathologists around the world who seek guidance with challenging cases.
The Anatomic Pathology Division within the Department of Pathology collectively diagnoses over 70,000 surgical pathology specimens each year (including over 25,000 consultations) in addition to almost 40,000 cytopathology specimens. This is one of the highest-volume diagnostic pathology practices in an academic center in the United States.
