It is a pleasure to introduce the new Brigham and Women’s/Harvard Medical School Psychiatry Residency. Our innovative program builds upon the outstanding tradition of Harvard Longwood Psychiatry Residency Program training, provides immersion in Brigham’s contemporary medical approach to brain-mind disorders, and facilitates access to the astounding range of Harvard academic programs and resources.
The Brigham Department of Psychiatry is defining the leading edge of medical psychiatry and neuropsychiatry. Just as internal medicine subspecialized as its evidence base increased, psychiatry is sub-specializing as well. While providing expert diagnosis and treatment of the full range of psychiatric conditions, and psychologically-sophisticated, compassionate care for all, we have a deep bench of sub-specialists who can evaluate the most complex cases at the interface of psychiatric, medical and neurological illness. In this context, we work very closely with our colleagues in neurology, neurosurgery, medicine, surgery and radiology.
The department is also laying the foundation for novel diagnostics and targeted therapeutics, with its translational research, multi-modal brain imaging, multi-dimensional biomarker development, statistical genetics, digital psychiatry, and precision, mechanism-based, multi-modal treatment studies.
Residents are key team members in this vibrant, warm training environment, and receive individualized mentorship and sponsorship to develop their interests and scholarly work, and become future leaders.
We look forward to welcoming you.

We at Brigham and Women’s Hospital train the next generation of leaders in academic psychiatry. We are building upon the strengths of our residents by fostering leadership skills, identifying and nurturing individual interests, and facilitating their meaningful contribution to a flourishing academic community. Our residents develop into superb clinicians, capable of diagnosing and managing the full spectrum of psychiatric disease with individual patients as well as across large-scale populations. They acquire a sophisticated understanding of the neural basis of mind and behavior, the disease processes that perturb it, and the psychosocial factors that reflect and influence it. We bring a strong clinical acumen, extensive sub-specialty expertise, and scientific rigor to our work in leadership, policy change, research, and the transformation of psychiatric medicine.
