Robotic Procedures at BWH

Surgeons at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Robotic Surgery use the da Vinci Surgical Systems to perform a variety of urologic, gynecologic and general laparoscopic procedures. Click on the links below to learn more.

Robotic Urologic Surgery

• radical prostatectomy - removal of the entire prostate gland and some surrounding tissue to treat localized prostate cancer
• radical and partial nephrectomy (kidney cancer removal) - removal of a kidney, lymph nodes and adrenal gland (radical), or a portion of a kidney (partial), to treat kidney cancer
• radical cystectomy (bladder cancer removal) with urinary diversion - partial or complete removal of the bladder, often as a means to treat bladder cancer
• pyeloplasty (reconstruction of renal pelvis to remove blockage) - reconstruction or revision of the renal pelvis (located between the kidney and the ureter) in order to eliminate a blockage

Robotic Gynecologic Surgery

• tubal reanastomosis (tubal sterilization reversal) - surgical procedure to restore a woman’s fertility after she has had her fallopian tubes “tied”
• myomectomy (uterine fibroid removal) - removal of uterine fibroids to treat bleeding, pain and incontinence symptoms, and, in some cases, to improve fertility
• total and radical hysterectomy - removal of the uterus, cervix and surrounding tissue typically as a means to treat gynecologic cancers
• robotic trachelectomy - removal of the cervix to treat cancer and maintain fertility
• staging for gynecologic cancers (lymph node removal) - removal of the lymph nodes to determine the extent or severity of gynecologic cancers 

Robotic Head and Neck Surgery

• transoral robotic surgery (TORS)  – removal of a benign tumor or cancerous tissue from a patient’s throat (pharynx or larynx).
