Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is a clinical, scientific, and academic leader with a long history of firsts in surgical and medical care. Our surgeons and physicians are advancing the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions for patients in Boston, across the country, and around the world.
Composed of 12 surgical divisions, the Department of Surgery at BWH provides high-quality, comprehensive surgical services delivered with expertise and compassion. BWH is home to an American College of Surgeons accredited Level I Trauma Center, the revolutionary Advanced Multimodality Image Guided Operating (AMIGO) suite and the STRATUS Center for medical simulation. The department is renowned for its pioneering transplant program and has one of the largest robotic-assisted surgery programs in the world. BWH is a leader in heart surgery through the Heart & Vascular Center and, as Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Center, is a premier oncology surgery center.
The department’s divisions, specialty centers, services and programs integrate as one strong multidisciplinary team, providing collaborative care for patients—using powerful and precise diagnostic and treatment technologies. We are committed to continuously improving the surgical pathways. The pathway for each surgical procedure has many steps that involve all members of the patient’s care team. Part of our pathways build on an approach called Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS). These are evidence-based guidelines designed to optimize hydration, nutrition and pain control – leading to faster, safer and more comfortable recovery from surgery.
