Welcome to the Surgery Residency and Fellowship Programs at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Our program offers the best academic training one can receive due to our strong clinical focus, a tradition of educational excellence, a diverse and exceptional group of residents and faculty, and a superb multi-varied research experience built on several NIH training grants.

The Brigham’s historical place in the medical world has long been solidified due to the ground-breaking achievements of our faculty, from Dr. Harvey Cushing’s establishment of the surgical research labs at Harvard Medical School to Dr. Joseph Murray’s  major contributions in the field of transplant immunology that earned him the Nobel Prize in 1990.  Our research labs currently have over $16 million dollars in funding, and our residents continue to make major contributions in both basic science and outcomes- related research. 

We pride ourselves on our resident and faculty esprit-de-corps and commitment to the highest level of excellence possible.  Faculty and residents work together to face tough issues such as work hour requirements and core competencies.  We make sure that we are adequately supporting and teaching each resident so they are ready to matriculate to the next level of training and, at the completion of their training, to successfully complete the board examinations and begin practice or fellowship.
