Center for Facial Restoration

The Brigham and Women’s Center for Facial Restoration brings together a wide variety of facial reconstruction experts to provide comprehensive and compassionate care for any patients who require facial restoration – from scar revision to face transplantation.

Using conventional and advanced therapies and surgical techniques, our multidisciplinary team of specialists can significantly improve the facial functionality and appearance of patients who have a flaw due to a birth defect, developmental abnormality, trauma, infection, tumor, or disease.

We work together with each of our patients and their families to develop an individualized care plan, including the creation of a specialized care team, to efficiently and effectively guide their course of care. Through this collaborative and compassionate approach, we aim to improve the quality of life of every patient.

Our Facial Restoration Services

The types of facial reconstruction performed at the Center are wide-ranging, including:

  • Plastic surgery transplantation - Facial transplantation includes the transfer of soft tissues, with or without facial bone, from a donor to a recipient. Microsurgical connection of blood vessels and nerves in the donated tissue to those of the recipient enables the return of sensation and function to the face.
  • Reconstruction after trauma – Our trauma surgery specialists can often replace missing or disfigured parts of the face with tissue and bone from nearby areas of the body.
  • Reconstruction related to cancers of the head and neck – We can reconstruct significant portions of a patient’s head and neck following the removal of cancerous tissue.
  • TORS Robotic surgery – Our head and neck surgeons use transoral robotic surgery (TORS), a minimally invasive procedure that uses a combination of high-definition 3D magnification, robotic technology, and miniature instruments to remove a benign tumor or cancerous tissue from a patient’s throat (pharynx or larynx).
  • Reconstruction of congenital and acquired (traumatic, ablative, vascular, lymphatic, and skeletal) deformities - Craniofacial deformities can range from small defects to disfiguring clefts and other malformations and correcting these malformations requires the experience and expertise of reconstructive plastic surgeons and an entire craniofacial team.
  • Facial nerve reanimation – We use a variety of conventional and innovative techniques to restore the functionality and appearance of our patients with facial paralysis.
  • Facial burn reconstruction – In addition to care and treatment immediately following burn injuries, we provide facial reconstruction for our patients who seek a better functional and aesthetic outcome.
  • Nose, ear, and eyelid repair – Our specialists offer delicate and detailed reconstruction of the nose, ear, and eyelid.
