Heart Transplant Program
The Heart Transplant program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is the oldest and largest in New England, with more than 600 heart transplants performed since 1984. In addition to performing the first heart transplant in New England, Brigham and Women’s Hospital Cardiac Surgery division also performed the first heart lung transplant in Massachusetts. Expert, multidisciplinary care is provided in patient screening, pre-operative monitoring, donor procurement, immediate postoperative care and postoperative monitoring.
Lung Transplant Program
The Lung Transplant program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital continues the tradition of excellence in organ transplantation at the hospital. Established in 1990, the Brigham and Women’s Hospital Lung Transplant Team performed both the first adult lung transplant in Massachusetts and the first double lung transplant in New England. Comprehensive care is provided to patients and their families both prior to and after lung transplantation.
Kidney Transplant Program
The Kidney Transplant Program at Brigham and Women’s Hospital is one of the oldest established renal programs in the country. The first identical twin kidney transplant was performed here in 1954 by Dr. Joseph Murray, who was later awarded the Nobel Science Prize for his pioneering work with immunosuppressants. Pre- and post-kidney transplant care is provided by a multidisciplinary team of specialists. Currently, approximately 80 kidney transplants are performed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital each year.

Face Transplant Program
Face transplant surgery, the transfer of face tissue from a deceased human donor to a patient with a severe facial deformity, is an innovative reconstructive procedure that has the potential to significantly improve the lives of patients with severe facial injuries.
Bone Marrow Transplant Program
The Dana Farber/Brigham and Women’s Cancer Care Bone Marrow Transplant Program is a joint effort between Dana Farber Cancer Center and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. It was one of the first Bone Marrow Transplant Centers in the world and is now one of the largest and busiest bone marrow transplant programs in the country, performing over 300 bone marrow transplants per year.
