The Division of Thoracic Surgery at BWH is world renowned, and the surgeons on our team have trained with the pioneers of lung transplantation. Our multidisciplinary care team follows transplant recipients during all phases of lung transplantation. From evaluation to post-transplant care, we attend to all of our patients’ medical needs and provide special educational and support services for their families.
Today’s Techniques and Technologies
We provide our patients with today’s most advanced screening, surgical, and therapeutic techniques and technologies. This includes our extracorporeal membranous oxygenation (ECMO) service, an advanced bridge to lung transplantation therapy. ECMO is an intensive care technology that provides respiratory support to a patient who is waiting for a lung transplant. We also are studying a new donor organ preservation method that may serve to boost the supply of donor lungs. Ex vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) helps restore and preserve the viability of a donor lung by restoring blood flow to the organ while it is outside the body.

Collaboration
Our team members work in close consultation with our colleagues in other subspecialty pulmonary practices at BWH to optimize patient care during the evaluation process, while on the waiting list, and after lung transplantation. In addition, BWH offers pulmonary rehabilitation and nutritional support to help patients meet candidacy requirements and optimize their overall health both before and after a transplant.
Our program also works in close collaboration with the other solid organ transplant programs at BWH to address challenging post-transplant issues, such as the management of antibody-mediated rejection.
