The Division of Thoracic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) offers comprehensive testing and advanced treatment for patients with diseases and conditions of the esophagus. Part of the digestive tract, the esophagus is the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. You typically are not aware of your esophagus until you swallow something too hot, cold or large. The esophagus can be the site of common and complex medical problems. AT BWH, our thoracic surgeons are world-renowned experts in a wide range of esophageal disorders, including Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal cancer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), achalasia, hernia and swallowing problems.
Our board-certified thoracic surgeons have sub-specialty training in the diagnosis and surgical management of esophageal disease, with particular expertise in minimally invasive techniques such as video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), robotic-assisted procedures, and endoluminal therapies. We are the surgical team for Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center, an exceptional collaboration between two world-class medical centers. All of our surgeons are faculty at Harvard Medical School and many are physician-researchers at the forefront of new therapies and cures—translating their studies from the laboratory to direct patient care.
We collaborate with specialists throughout BWH and communicate openly with patients and families to create care plans that consider individual needs. Along with a supportive clinical and administrative staff, we work as one cohesive team to provide the best possible care for each patient. In addition, patients have full access to world-renowned Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Thoracic surgery services are available at Brigham and Women’s Hospital main campus, at Milford Regional Medical Center in Milford, and in Weymouth at Dana-Farber Brigham Cancer Center in clinical affiliation with South Shore Hospital.
