May 2008
I wanted to share with you the Capital Allocations "Road Trips" which Kathleen Monbouquette, Judy Veinbergs and I have taken over the last few months. These were incredible experiences and I hope that such trips will become an annual event in which some of you will choose to participate.
The Friends is unique in that the Members and Board not only work to raise the money but also designate the projects on which the money will be spent. This year, I felt that an important final component of that process would be to visit as many sites as possible to actually see the item in its setting, along with the tasteful sign which Elaine Garland designed for display with each item. Display of the sign on the item, if feasible, was also a new requirement which our dear Joan Crocker and I added last year, as Co-Chairs of the Committee. These visits personalize the process for the recipients and the Friends.
About two months ago, Brian Bator of Main Frame Photography accompanied Kathleen Monbouquette and me to Molecular Biology to view the Centrifuge and to Plastic Surgery to view the Wound Irrigation Machine. I also went to Pain Management to view the Aquarium. Last Friday, Judy Veins berg, Brian and I went to Brookside Community Health Center, Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center, and the Chapel on the main campus of BWH for a similar trip where we toured the facilities. These are amazing places with caring people providing wonderful services. We viewed dental equipment, machines, new chairs and carpets for the Chapel and, most impressive to me, the various symbols for spiritual and religious ideologies painted on the ceiling circle in the Chapel. This circle -- with no beginning and no end, embracing and including diverse beliefs -- was touchingly poignant to me, as our members are diverse, yet one in the shared commitment to the Friends and the mission of BWH.
At each site, we were met with open arms and the gratitude to the Friends expressed by each and every person to whom we were introduced, not only for the current year's gift but also for gifts given in past years, was beautiful.
Brian Bator's pictures of both trips will be displayed on the website and I hope to work with our Public Relations Committee to compose an article for internal and external distribution on this. We are grateful to Main Frame for its continued support of our work.
I hope that this excites everyone enough to solicit for Hole Sponsorships and gift certificates for our upcoming Golf Tournament; invited new members to our May 29 Membership event; and join the Events Committee on May 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Skip Jack's, 55 Needham Street, Newton, MA for a planning session. The circle of fundraising also never ends!
