The Respiratory Care Department prides itself on direct involvement in all areas of the hospital, particularly in our 10 intensive-care units. Our critical care therapists play a leading role in the management of patients receiving invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilatory support, through the use of therapist-directed protocols. Our Adult Therapists work directly on all patient care units, and respond to emergencies throughout the hospital campus.
The Neonatal Respiratory Therapists are present in our 46-bed Level III Nursery and work as part of the primary care team to provide high quality patient care. They manage patients using conventional ventilation modes as well as high-frequency ventilation and nitric oxide administration. The NICU Respiratory Therapists attend all high-risk deliveries and are involved in various research studies, including delivery room management of the newborn and telemedicine transport.

They attend daily work rounds with the house staff along with weekly Metabolic Support Service patient care rounds. The out-patient dietitians counsel patients working closely with a variety of clinics including thoracic, radiation oncology and GI. In addition, they often give presentations in the community and lead weight loss groups.
The dietitians have numerous opportunities for continuing education including bimonthly Metabolic Support teaching rounds, monthly Longwood Nutrition Rounds, and many other departmental continuing education opportunities for the dietitians to keep abreast of the most current advances in medical nutrition therapy.
