Careers in the Healthcare Field—A Reality Check
Healthcare continues to be the largest employer in the US, Massachusetts and Boston.
- 13.5 million jobs between in health care will be created between 2004-2014; that’s a 19% growth in new jobs
- Hospitals employ 40% of all healthcare workers
The reality, though, is that:
- Most jobs in healthcare require a minimum of an Associate of Science degree
- More than 66% of positions in hospitals are professional and technical
- 3 out of 10 hospital workers are RNs
- 18% of hospital workers are in office and administrative support; 4% are in management, business, and finance; 3% are “other”
- Most professional, technical and administrative positions in healthcare require a college education/professional certification
So what does this mean for you? Continuing your education is essential to obtaining a position and moving up the ladder in healthcare. Does this mean that you can’t obtain a job in the hospital without higher education? Certainly not! Just realize that education is an essential part of planning a successful career for yourself in the healthcare industry.
