Managing human capital is of utmost importance in any work environment. In order to effectively oversee a team of people, there must be a union between leadership and management. This session will focus on managing, leading, and motivating people. This session will also focus on how to effectively stay organized and prioritize various responsibilities. It is designed to provide leaders with simple skills, tools and ideas on how to manage performance and behavior of individuals and will provide strategies for meeting the challenges of leaders.
Module 1: Building a Team. The most important thing for the hospital to have is great service. The second most important thing is to have a great team culture. A positive team culture motivates people to excel and is the foundation of great customer service. In this first of 3 modules, team building ideas and techniques will be shared with leaders that will promote teamwork and productivity among the staff. Specific topics covered include managing team conflict, managing workplace negativity and effective team building.
Module 2: Leading a Team.Leading a team is a skill that requires both patience and knowledge of sound management practices. As a leader, it is far more effective to have a team that manages themselves and is empowered to act so that you spend less time managing and more time leading the department. This session will cover topics including: how to coach, empower, deliver feedback, and set performance goals.
Module 3: Planning and Managing.With so many competing priorities in today's fast paced healthcare environment it easy to become mired in the everyday tasks and lose sight of the big picture. How do you plan effectively so that the actions you take have the most impact on meeting your strategic goals? This session will lead you through the process of setting priorities and goals so that you can be more effective at reaching long-term departmental goals. Topics covered will include planning and managing your time, creating priorities and making strategic business decisions.

Building a Diverse, Inclusive Workforce

Today's workplace is more culturally-diverse, more racially-diverse, more gender-diverse and more values-diverse than at any other time in our history. As members of our workforce come together across differences in values, backgrounds, and workplace expectations healthcare employees and managers at all levels are asking: How can we leverage our enormous diversity to build productive high performing work teams for the future? How can we develop our individual skills in valuing and managing differences as we work together to serve our diverse patient population? This seminar will combine experiential exercises and lectures to outline the latest thinking in diversity education, and group dialogue to explore how these developments are shaping the way we work together to reinvent our workplaces and leverage diversity for the future. Participants will:
- Understand the challenges and opportunities of working with diverse employees and serving diverse patients.
- Learn the key attributes of an inclusive work team and how to facilitate inclusion
- Explore the many dimensions of diversity and appreciate how these serve as filters and shape our behaviors and expectations of each other.
- Appreciate how our own preferences, values, and backgrounds can help or hinder our effectiveness in communicating and working across generational differences.
- Examine personal biases and learn techniques for managing these when dealing with others.
Identify interpersonal and supervisory diversity issues and learn problem-solving skills for addressing these dilemmas.

The Human Resource team is dedicated to supporting the mission of BWH by understanding the business and professional needs of those we serve. Recognizing that great patient care begins with great people, the Human Resources team has implemented a variety of "best practices" within the HR professions of recruiting and hiring, developing, and retaining staff, employee relations, and performance management. Building an HR Foundation for Leaders is a 3-day session that includes modules that focus on hiring, developing, and retaining staff. This program provides managers with foundational Human Resources information. The sessions include the following:
Module 1: Fundamentals of Employment Law; Harassment Free Workplace and Civility; HR Policies and Procedures; Documenting Overview
Module 2: Performance Management; Ending the Employment Relationship; Managing Leaves; Recruitment: Attracting and Acquiring Talent

Nuts and Bolts of Leading at BWH is a 1-day interactive program designed to provide new members of the BWH management team with the tools and information required to achieve success in their position. The program includes discussions focusing on what is expected of leaders at BWH. This full-day orientation also includes presentations from these key areas of the institution: Human Resources, Finance, Capital Purchasing, Materials Management, Compliance, Health Information Services, Information Systems and Center for Clinical Excellence.

Strategic Leadership for Innovation and Change
Course Code: BWHLIC
Let's face it, our ability to be successful today and in the future depends on how well we innovate and adapt to change. In this unique, interactive workshop, participants will discuss and explore ways to lead BWH towards a future filled with promise and continued growth. The day is comprised of 5 sections, including: Leading with Integrity, Strategic Thinking, Initiating Action, Fostering Innovation, and Leading During Times of Change. Most sections will be lead by a BWH senior leader. Workshop faculty includes: Kate Walsh, Executive VP and Chief Operating Officer, Robert Goldszer, MD, MBA, Associate Chief Medical Officer, Sharon Vitti, MS, VP of Clinical Services, Elizabeth Glaser, MBA, VP of Clinical Services, Sanjay Pathak, MBA, MPA, VP of Surgical Services and Imaging and staff from the Organizational Development & Learning department. In order to successfully complete this workshop and earn credit participants must attend all portions of the training and complete all related activities.
This course is offered to all BWH employees that are part of the management team (supervisors, managers, directors and all other leaders).
