Renal Transplant History

Many transplant milestones have taken place here, including the world’s first successful human organ transplant, a kidney transplanted from one identical twin to another, in 1954.

The team was headed by Dr. Joseph Murray, a plastic surgeon and Dr. John Merrill, one of the first nephrologists in the US. Joseph Murray received the Nobel price for this groundbreaking event (Dr Merril died unfortunately before the Nobel price announcement).
