BWH leaders presented a check of more than $42,000 from the Tobin School Fund to the Maurice J. Tobin Elementary School at the hospital’s May 17 Administrative Leaders’ Group meeting. The money was raised through employees’ contributions to BWH’s annual Tobin School fundraising campaign last fall. The check will go directly to the school and support activities such as summer camp, field trips, extracurricular activities for students; professional development classes for faculty and staff, books for the library; and essentials such as winter clothing, eyeglasses, food and household necessities for students’ families. The Tobin School and BWH have maintained a partnership for the past decade. “The overall goal of the partnership is to support the academic mission of the school by increasing parent, family, community and hospital involvement in students’ learning,” said BWH President Jeffrey Otten at the May 17 check presentation.
The retirement of Janet Short, principal of the Tobin School, was also announced at the meeting. Short, who has been principal of the school for the past 19 years, was one of the original promoters of the BWH-Tobin School partnership, which began as a result of a request from Short for assistance with minor building maintenance and some health education classes. “As a result of Janet’s leadership and commitment to this partnership, strong connections between the two organizations have emerged,” added Otten. “By graciously opening the doors of her school to the BWH community, she has enriched the lives of hundreds of students and employees through programs such as Brigham Book Buddies and the establishment of the Tobin Fund, our annual employee-giving initiative which has contributed more than $320,000 to the school.” “Janet has been instrumental in opening doors for Tobin School children and their families by promoting an atmosphere that values collaborations and partnerships,” said JudyAnn Bigby, MD, medical director, Community Health Programs. “We will miss her commitment and energy.” Following the ALG meeting, members of the BWH community wished Short well on her retirement with a reception in the Deland Board Room.
