Patient Experience: Visiting the Pap Smear Evaluation Center

The Pap Smear Evaluation Center evaluates, manages, and treats patients with abnormal cervical or vaginal cytology. The center uses the latest innovations to provide advanced evaluation through the use of colposcopy, HPV testing and state-or-the-art evaluation for more specific diagnosis of possible cervical pre-cancer or cancer.

While providing evaluation services for physicians within Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center, the Pap Smear Evaluation Center is also renowned as a major referral center for more complicated cases.

The center also is a resource for consultative second opinions, reevaluating test results and providing confirmation of a diagnosis.

Why visit the center?

You have been referred to us after being diagnosed with an abnormal pap smear or cervical dysplasia. Some patients are also seen here for a second opinion after a diagnosis of cervical dysplasia. All patients who are referred to our center will be evaluated by colposcopy. This will be done whether or not you had a colposcopy by your referring doctor.

There are several members of the medical team who will provide care for you at the center. They include our attending physicians-Drs. Feldman, Berkowitz, Goldstein, and Garner. Other members of the team include fellows (MDs specializing in gynecologic oncology), residents, medical students, registered nurses, and patient care assistants. If at any time during your course of treatment you have a question or concern, please feel free to ask any one of these medical care providers.

The physicians will discuss the results of your colposcopy when it is performed. If a biopsy or a pap smear is done during your appointment, the results will be available approximately 2-3 weeks after your appointment. Once the physicians review these results, our office nurse will contact you by phone or a letter to give you the results and the recommended follow-up plan. Therefore, it is important that you provide us with updated telephone numbers and addresses.

We will also send a letter to your referring doctor with your test results and the treatment plan.

The Pap Smear Evaluation Center is located on the third floor of the Ambulatory Service Building I at Brigham and Women's Hospital, 75 Francis Street, Boston, Mass. Our office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call us at (617) 732-8844.
