Cardiac surgeons at BWH have accomplished many firsts, as chronicled in the milestones. Achievements during the past decade include the first triple transplant in New England involving the transplantation of a heart and two lungs, and the first transplant of a heart, two lungs, and kidney from a single donor into four different recipients. In 1996, division surgeons began performing minimally invasive valve surgery through a small chest incision. In 1997, a BWH patient was the first in New England to leave the hospital with a portable mechanical heart pump called a left ventricular assist device. And recently, the division has implemented robotic surgery for mitral valve repair.
