STUDENT SUCCESS JOBS PROGRAM
The Student Success Jobs Program (SSJP) is an after-school and summer internship program for students who are interested in pursuing careers in health care. Through this program, 45 sophomore, junior and senior high school students from partnering Boston Public Schools have the opportunity to explore various aspects of the hospital and become aware of different health careers. The goals of the program are to match students with mentors, provide them with a positive work experience, and enhance their interest in higher education.
Each student is assigned an adult mentor/supervisor who works with him or her throughout the program to offer consistent guidance and to answer job-related questions. Students work ten hours per week during the school year and 25 hours per week during the summer in departments such as Rheumatology, General Surgery, Radiology and Reproductive Medicine.
ScienceWorks Internship Program for 8th Graders
ScienceWorks is geared to exposing graduating middle school students to health care professions in a hospital setting, to provide them with volunteer, employment and science education opportunities.
It is our goal to teach and reinforce characteristics of responsibility, discipline, maturity, communication and work ethic.
ScienceWorks is offered to 30 eighth graders at the Maurice J. Tobin School, Mission Grammar School and Roxbury Preparatory Charter School.
The program starts in mid-May, with a four-week volunteer opportunity. Students are placed in various hospital departments and volunteer approximately six (6) hours per week. During the spring, students will also participate in two seminars introducing the academic session and the topic that will be studied during the summer.
After completing their 24-hour volunteer commitment and seminar participation, and as long as they meet the expectations of the program criteria and their department supervisor, students will be eligible for the summer portion of the program which runs for 6 weeks during July and August. Students in the summer portion are paid on an hourly basis and work approximately 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday and are obligated to attend the academic session.
In the academic session, students will be learning about various aspects of the human body. Each week, they will take part in an activity and learn about a different aspect of anatomy and different ways to study it. They will learn about the body from a psychological, physiological, medical and technological standpoint. Students will meet experts in the field, conduct their own study and do inquiry-based projects. Weekly activities include department and lab tours, BWH physicians who will be guest speakers, and field trips to the Museum of Fine Arts and Museum of Science.
During the beginning of the summer program, students will go on a day trip and will participate in group-challenge and team building activities, and develop goals for the summer program. This will be an effective way to help students bond with each other and create a strong foundation for the program. During the last week of the program, the students will participate in a field day with various activities and events.
To compliment their work experience, exposure to the hospital and learning in science, students will take part in weekly two-hour seminars on topics such as self-esteem, self-identity, communication, time management, and peer relationships. Seminars will be facilitated by college students.
At the conclusion of ScienceWorks, there will be a graduation to acknowledge the hard work and accomplishments of each student. Students will present on what they studied in the academic session. BWH supervisors, students’ families and school administrators will be invited to this event.
