The top 2 panels are echocardiographic (heart ultrasound) images from a patient with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). In contrast to the echocardiogram from a patient without heart disease (the bottom 2 panels), you will notice that the walls of the heart are much thicker. The increased thickening is particularly prominent in the left ventricle (the chamber in the bottom of the left-side panels and on the top-right of the right-side panels). As is typically the case, the pumping (systolic) function of the heart is vigorous in the patient with HCM.
