What is a typical visit? What does it involve and how long does it take?
For patients who are new to the CVGC, you will be scheduled for a 60 minute appointment in the clinic. Our Program Coordinator will contact you by telephone prior to the appointment to collect information about your medical history and family history and to answer any questions that you have about the appointment. At the time of your appointment you will get an EKG, a clinical evaluation by a cardiologist, and an educational session. Necessary diagnostic testing will be coordinated with your scheduled clinic appointment.
Return appointments are generally only 30 minutes and include an EKG and a clinical evaluation. Other evaluations will be scheduled on a case-by-case basis, as needed. Our genetic counselor is available at all appointments.
How do I make an appointment?
For additional information or to schedule and appointment you can call 617-732-4837.
Where do I go for my appointment?
The Cardiology clinic is located in Brigham Medical Specialties in the Ambulatory Services section of BWH (exits 5 and 6 off "The Pike").
What tests might be done during the clinic visit? How should I prepare myself?
All patients in the Cardiology clinic get an EKG at time of the appointment. There are no special instructions for an EKG. You may have other tests scheduled either before or after your clinic appointment. Examples of other tests include: echocardiogram, exercise stress test, and MRI. You will be notified if one of these tests is scheduled and instructions will be given to you at that time. If you have any questions about your appointments you can call the Cardiology clinic at 617-732-4837.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
If this is your first appointment, please have medical records faxed to the new patient coordinator 617-566-4092 prior to your appointment. This gives us time to review your records before your appointment. You can also bring medical records with you at the time of the appointment. It is helpful to collect information about your family history. Examples of helpful information include: whether there is anyone with a heart condition or other medical problem, any sudden deaths in the family, any unexplained deaths, results of any heart screening on close family members, and autopsy results.
How will I get feedback?
Your referring physician will receive a summary note following your visit. Members of the CVGC team will also be available to speak to you directly if you have any questions.
Is there follow-up care?
At the end of your appointment you will be given specific time frames to schedule any needed follow-up appointments. Follow-up appointments can be scheduled at the cardiology clinic desk after your clinic appointment or by telephone at 617-732-4837. Patients are always welcome to schedule a follow-up appointment if symptoms change.
