Mary Lou brings years of cardiovascular nursing experience to her role as Executive Director in the Shapiro Center at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She is renowned at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for her compassion and care, with both patients and nursing staff.
Mary Lou’s interest in gender-specific care is particularly evident in her Masters thesis, "Enrollment of Women in an Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (CRP)." In her thesis, she examined how women were enrolled in an outpatient CRP as well as the factors related to a woman’s enrollment.
She has received many awards for her approach to nursing and nursing management, including the American Association of Critical Care Nurse (AACN) Excellent Nurse Manager Award, the Dennis Thomson Compassionate Care Scholar Award and the Dennis Thomson Leadership Award.
She received her nursing diploma from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital in PA, and then received a BS in Health Care Administration from Emmanuel College in Boston, MA. In 1996, she completed her Masters in Nursing (MSN) degree as a Cardio Pulmonary Clinical Nurse Specialist from Massachusetts General Hospital’s Institute for Health Professionals.
