BWH Heritage
General Surgery has been a core component of the Department of Surgery since its inception, providing the basis for the full spectrum of treatment of the surgical patient. More than 50 years ago, Francis D. Moore, M.D., began his important work in the metabolic care of the surgical patient. The Peter Bent Brigham Hospital became one of the first hospitals nationwide to dedicate a postoperative unit to the critical care of surgical patients. In the 1970s, John Brooks, M.D., spearheaded major advances in pancreatic surgery and benign esophageal surgery, and Richard E. Wilson, M.D., working in General Surgery, was instrumental in developing the subspecialty of Surgical Oncology. In 1998, the department reformulated a multidisciplinary Intensive Care Unit team and started the BWH Intensive Care Unit Service by recruiting Juan Carlos Puyana, M.D., as the first full-time director. The team has grown to include anesthesiologists, pulmonologists, and thoracic surgeons. Michael J. Zinner, M.D., chairman of the Department of Surgery and surgeon-in-chief at BWH, served as the division chief from 1994-2000. Effective July 2000, Francis D. Moore, Jr., M.D., heads the division.
