Patient Information:
Preparation for Total Thyroidectomy

No aspiration or medicines containing aspirin should be taken for one week prior to surgery. You may use Tylenol. If in doubt, check with your doctor.
If you are using Fosamax, please stop using it 3 weeks prior to your surgery.
Smokers should cut down to no more than 3-4 cigarettes/day for 2 weeks prior to surgery, preferably, you should stop smoking completely. Smoking can cause bleeding, coughing and other post-operative complications.
No alcohol or intoxicating drugs should be taken for one week prior to surgery.
Please inform your surgeon of any signs of a cold, infection or fevers that appear before surgery.
Do not take any medications unless ordered by your surgeon or the anesthesiologist after midnight on the day of your operation.
Day of Surgery

Arrive in the Admitting Office at the time indicated.

You will be accompanied to the pre-op area. |

Your family will be asked to wait in the Surgical Liaison area, located in the Lobby area. |
In Pre-Op Area
Intravenous (IV) will be started - Meet the anesthesiologist - Be given sedation - Be brought to the operating room and put to sleep for surgery
After Surgery
You will wake up in the Recovery Room - Transferred to a surgical unit when ready - Have a dressing over your neck. - The incision is closed with sutures that dissolve.
You may have a small drain (Jackson Pratt) that will come from the mid portion of the incision and is removed 24 hours after surgery.
