  | Just about anyone who makes a commitment to increasing her physical activity faces that burning question: What's the best place to exercise, at home or a health club? |
Actually, one place isn't better than another. Deciding where to exercise comes down to picking the situation where you feel most comfortable, and the one that works best with your lifestyle.
Here are some things to consider when you're making your decision:
Exercising on your own
Many women say the privacy of exercising at home is what appeals most to them. If you can start and stick with a routine on your own, it's a viable option - you don't need to drive or take public transportation, you don't have to talk to anyone, and there are plenty of good exercise programs available on videotape to give you some variety.
Home exercise (inside or out) can be less expensive than working out at a gym or health club. Plan on investing in a good pair of athletic shoes, some dumbbells and exercise mat, the right clothing for all weather excursions, and you'll be in good shape for going it on your own.
Here's another option - if you work, try to get together with co-workers during lunch to walk or jog.
Clubbing it
Some women find that working out outside the home is a better fit for them. Health clubs have a variety of exercise options (classes and equipment), professional fitness instructors, and other people who share a common interest.
Many clubs have early-morning and evening hours, making it easy to stop by before or after work. If you're interested in a club, ask for a free day pass so that you can get a good feeling for it before making a commitment.
The only drawback could be the cost of health club membership. If you work, find out if your employer has any discount arrangements with nearby clubs (many do). Your health plan also may offer benefits that you can apply to a club membership.
