A Guide to Faculty Annual Career Reviews
Recognizing Brigham and Women’s commitment to the professional and academic development of our faculty community, hospital leadership is committed to ensuring all benefits eligible BWH faculty receive an annual career review. This website is a resource for reviewers, faculty, and administrators; it provides information and tools to help make the annual review a meaningful and productive experience.
What is a FAC-Review? Who Receives a FAC-Review? Who Gives a Review?
The Faculty Annual Career Review (FAC-Review) is an opportunity for BWH employed, benefits eligible physicians and scientists to have an annual in-person meeting to discuss clinical or research performance, academic and professional achievements, short and long-term goals, and additional support needed to achieve career goals. Upon date of hire, each faculty member is designated a reviewer, which can be a division/department chief, lab director, principal investigator, or senior faculty.
The Review is Annual, but the Conversation Should Not Be.
It is important to note that while the annual review represents many facets of faculty life and is a well-informed discussion, it is not the only time in a year performance or career questions and concerns can be addressed. It is strongly encouraged that an ongoing, two-way relationship be established between reviewer and faculty.
The Annual Reviews Task Force - Background and Final Recommendations
In February 2009, Brigham and Women’s Physicians Organization (BWPO) and the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (CFDD) formed a task force to develop recommendations for faculty annual reviews.
The task force was co-chaired by Dr. Jessica Dudley, Chief Medical Officer, BWPO and Dr. Barbara Bierer, Senior Vice President, Research and Director, CFDD; and included representatives from BWH departments and roles, including chiefs, chairs, and department administrators.
Task Force Recommendations
The recommendations below were approved by the BWPO executive committee in November 2009.
- BWH faculty will be assigned a designated reviewer. BWH is a strong academic institution in which mentorship should not only be defined by regulatory requirements; rather, it should also include a conversation based on career goals and achievements.
- BWH faculty will receive an annual review. The academic, teaching, and clinical/research commitments and goals of BWH’s faculty represent the pillars on which the hospital stands. It is critical to our faculty and the community to annually discuss progress and future goals.
- Reviewers will be trained on giving effective feedback. Training will ensure reviewers know how to prepare and deliver a constructive annual review.
- Reviews will include the use of a 4-component review form. The components include performance/research review, academic review (updated CV in HMS format), self evaluation, and reviewer feedback.
