Two post-partum units, each with 60 beds, provide all patients with a single mother-baby room and are staffed by specially trained nurses who provide a safe and supportive environment for recovery from pregnancy associated illnesses. The vast majority of referred patients leave our hospital with a healthy newborn. Therefore, even as recovery from illness begins, education and support for the care of the newborn is offered. In-hospital closed circuit television, with presentations in English and Spanish, assist new families by demonstrating effective breast/bottle feeding techniques, safe use of car seats, etc. Our philosophy of Family Focused Care encourages and supports family participation. Therefore, each room has accomodations available for a significant other to spend as much time as possible, including over-night sleeping cots. For those who will need coordination of ongoing newborn care after they leave the Brigham and Women's Hospital, social service and nursing support is available.
