The Epilepsy and EEG Program
THE BRIGHAM AND WOMEN'S EPILEPSY PROGRAM is a level IV Epilepsy Center certified by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) and offering comprehensive care to patients with epilepsy. The program was started in 1993 by neurologist-epileptologist Edward Bromfield, M.D. and neurosurgeon Peter M. Black, M.D., Ph.D. Barbara Dworetzky, M.D. is the chief of the Division of Epilepsy, EEG and Sleep. She is also the assistant chief and director of our Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship that leads to ACGME certification.
We work with a multidisciplinary team of experts to discuss and manage complex patients who come for EEG monitoring, definitive diagnosis, surgery, and medication manipulation.
The program offers second opinion consultations to confirm a diagnosis of seizure or epilepsy, advanced medical and surgical treatment of poorly controlled epilepsy, scalp and intracranial video-EEG monitoring, intraoperative electrocorticography, intracarotid amobarbital testing, state-of-the-art neuroimaging, placement and adjustment of vagal nerve stimulators, management of status epilepticus, EEG monitoring in the ICU, and evoked potentials.
Among the clinical and research interests of our staff are women’s issues (hormones, pregnancy, & menopause), brain tumors, new epilepsy treatments, status epilepticus, sleep, intensive care monitoring and neuroimaging in relation to surgical treatment of epilepsy. In addition, we have opportunities for interested patients to participate in a variety of clinical research studies. Our current research projects include multicenter collaborations in clinical trials, hormones, epidemiology, and genetics, as well as local projects generated from the hospital research database, or our own large monitoring database.
