Neuromuscular Service

The neuromuscular service provides comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, consultation and management of all neuromuscular disorders, including motor neuron disease (ALS), peripheral neuropathies, myopathies, muscular dystrophy and myasthenia gravis. Currently we offer comprehensive neuromuscular services at the main campus of Brigham and Women's Hospital and diagnostic services at the Brigham and Women's/Massachusetts GeneralHealth Care Center.

Disorders Treated

Faculty in the neuromuscular division at Brigham and Women's Hospital diagnose and treat a full spectrum of diseases and disorders of the peripheral nervous system including:

Muscle Diseases:

• Inflammatory myopathies
• Neuromuscular Division Research Program on Inflammatory Myopathies
• Dermatomyositis (DM)
• Polymyositis (PM)

• Inclusion body myositis (IBM)

• Metabolic myopathies
• Mitochondrial myopathies (such as Kearns-Sayre syndrome, MERRF and MELAS)
• Glycogen storage disease (such as McArdle's disease and Pompe disease)
• Disorders of lipid metabolism (such as CPT2 deficiency)
• Toxic myopathies (such as Statin myopathies)
• Muscular dystrophies (such as Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophies, fasciocapular humeral dystrophy, limb-girdle muscular dystrophy and myotonic dystrophy)
• Congenital myopathies (such as nemaline myopathy and centronuclear myopathy)
• Muscle channelpathies (such as periodic paralyses and myotonic congenita)

Diseases of the neuromuscular transmission:

• Myasthenia gravis
• Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS)
• Botulism

Motor Neuron Diseases:

• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
• Primary lateral sclerosis
• Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)
• Bulbospinal muscular atrophy (Kennedy's disease)
• Post polio syndrome

Neuropathies:

• Focal radiculopathies (such as carpal tunnel syndrome and Bell's palsy)
• Plexopathies (such as Brachial plexopathies and Personage Turner's syndrome)
• Vasculitic neuropathies
• Peripheral neuropathies (such as diabetic neuropathy)
• Guillain-Barre syndrome and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP)
• Multifocal motor neuropathy
• Inherited neuropathies such as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT)

For Medical Professionals

Neuromuscular (ACGME) Fellowship

Harvard Medical School/Partners Neurology offers six positions for a one-year ACGME-approved fellowship in Neuromuscular Medicine. Fellows will be exposed to a wide array of patients with different neuromuscular disorders while rotating through the neuromuscular clinics and EMG laboratories at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Children’s Hospital in Boston. Opportunities for a second year of research, as well as instruction in the performance and interpretation of muscle and nerve biopsies are also available.
