Clinical Fellowships
Fellowship training in Subspecialties of Anatomic Pathology is available to trainees who are eligible for American Board of Pathology certification in either AP (starting Year 4) or combined AP/CP (starting Year 5). In addition, Advanced Subspecialty-Elective years following a fellowship-level curriculum are available to BWH Pathology AP Residents (starting Year 3) who have completed the core curriculum (see BWH Residency AP Curriculum). Fellows have greater responsibility and independence and play a key role in the orientation, training and supervision of residents.
For information on Advanced Training in Clinical Pathology, please see the CP Curriculum page, and Principal Contacts for Clinical Pathlogy training. For information on the 2-year program leading to certification by the American Board of Medical Genetics, Please see the Fellowship in Clinical Cytogenetics page.
ACGME-Accredited Fellowships
Accredited Fellowship training leads to Subspecialty certification in an area recognized by the American Board of Pathology. The ACGME-Accredited Fellowships offered at Brigham and Women's Hospital are as follows:
Also available at Brigham and Women's Hospital is an ACGME-Certified program in Women's and Perinatal Pathology, not leading to separate American Board of Pathology certification, but drawing on a long tradition of excellence at BWH in the subspecialties of gynecologic and obstetric pathology.
Non-ACGME-Accredited Fellowships
Trainees eligible for Primary ABPath Certification in AP or Combined AP/CP often pursue additional year(s) of training to become competent in one or more subspecialties of interest. This Fellowship training does not lead to additional certification, and is not accredited by the ACGME. Nevertheless, Clinical Fellowships at Brigham and Women's Hospital undergo rigorous curriculum review and oversight by the institutional Graduate Medical Education Committee, and meet the standards set by the ACGME for its accredited programs. Fellows benefit from exposure to the world-renowned faculty and surgical pathology material, and are involved in review of consultation material, clinicopathologic correlation and tumor board conferences.
Trainees may apply for the year-long Surgical Pathology Fellowship, which provides advanced training in multiple clinical subspecialty areas. Alternatively, trainees may apply for a year-long concentrated Fellowship in one of the subspecialty areas listed below:
