The research laboratories of the Department encompass a wide variety of areas and emphasize a modern, multi-disciplinary approach to pathophysiology and mechanisms of disease. Selected examples of current activities in the areas of emphasis in the basic research groups of the Department of Pathology at the Brigham and Women's Hospital are: Vascular Biology: Research topics include: Leukocyte-endothelial interactions, molecular basis of endothelial gene expression and role of hemodynamic factors, targeted disruption of endothelial adhesion molecules, molecular mechanism of atherosclerosis. Michael A. Gimbrone, Jr., M.D. Chairman and Director F. William Luscinskas, Ph.D. Associate Director Tanya Mayadas-Norton, Ph.D. David S. Milstone, M.D., Ph.D Pulmonary Pathobiology: Research topics include: Mechanisms of inhalant-induced lung injury, the biology of alveolar macrophages, pathogenesis of mesothelioma and the molecular basis of lung development, including neuroendocrine differentiation. Immunology: Research topics include: Cellular interactions in immune responses, immunology of vascular endothelium, cytokines, lymphocyte activation and tolerance, targeted disruption of lymphocyte molecules, autoimmunity, and antigen presentation. Molecular Oncology: Research topics include: Molecular studies of onco-genes and tumor suppressor genes, analysis of chromosomal aberrations in cancer and benign disorders, control of DNA synthesis and the cell cycle, mechanisms of gene transcription, immunogenetics, receptor mediated control of cell differentiation, signal transduction, and molecular methods of disease diagnosis Neuropathology: Research topics include: Oncogenesis of glial tumors, developmental neurobiology, and neurodegenerative diseases. Cardiac pathology - Research topics include: Cadiovascular dysfunction and cardiac device malfunction Diseases of the female reproductive system - Women's and Perinatal Pathology Division. Research topics include: cervical and vulvular diseases, ovarian cancer and fallopian tubes, uterine leiomyoma, Endometrial Disease Research, and genetics of endometrial cancer Skin diseases - Research topics include: skin lymphoma, melanoma, and sweat gland tumor Genetic basis of Inherited disorders - Research topics include: genetic hearing loss, and structural genomic variation, chromosomal arnormalities in cancer Surgical Pathology - Research topics include: Gastrointestinal stromal tumor, inflammatory bowel disease, sarcoma, liposarcomas, and preneoplastic gastrointestinal conditions Perhaps you or a family member or friend has benefited from the diagnostic expertise of our department, or we are conducting research on a disease of interest to you. If so, you may wish to make a donation to one of the research programs in the department. To learn more about making a financial contribution to our research efforts, please contact the Development Office of Brigham and Women's Hospital (617-732.5008) or contact the director of the appropriate division.
