Autopsies are performed from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm, six days a week, 8:00am to 12:00 pm on Sunday and holidays. Only after Pathology has received the following items: report of death, autopsy permit form, clinical abstract form, patient chart, and the body of the deceased. Patients previously cared for at Brigham and Women's Hospital who die elsewhere (i.e., home, another hospital, nursing home, etc.) may have an autopsy performed by the BWH Pathology Department.

Christopher Fletcher, MD, Director
Tissue diagnosis of the complete spectrum of medical and surgical diseases, including diagnostic biopsies and needle aspirates, is performed in the Surgical Pathology Division. Extensive experience in such areas as: dermatopathology, hematopathology, oncologic, gastrointestinal, soft tissue tumor, breast, male genitourinary, cardiovascular, renal, pulmonary, rheumatologic, and infectious disease pathology. Also provided are special services in electron microscopy and immunopathology.

Christopher Crum, MD, Division Chief
The Women's and Perinatal Pathology Division performs tissue diagnosis from gynecological and obstetrical surgeries and other procedures related to high-risk pregnancy and disorders diagnosed prenatally. Specialists offer expert consultative services relative to rare disorders of the human female reproductive organs, fetus and placenta.

Edmund Cibas, MD, Director
The Cytology Division, comprised of Board-certified pathologists, provides diagnosis of exfoliative and aspiration cytology specimens using routine cytologic methods. In selected circumstances, these methods are supplemented by immunocytochemical and flow cytometric evaluation.

Rebecca Folkerth, M.D, Division Chief
The Neuropathology Division conducts tissue diagnosis of brain, spinal cord, muscular, and peripheral nerve lesions. General consultative services in neuropathology are also available.
