The APS assists clinicians in improving the identification, behavioral management and referral of substance-abusing patients through outpatient evaluations, readily available inpatient consultation, active liaison to high incidence areas and facilitation of post-discharge follow-up care. It coordinates and promotes a variety of hospital-wide educational programs and training opportunities regarding the recognition and management of substance abuse in the medical setting.
