Mission Statement
THE DIVISION OF PULMONARY AND CRITICAL CARE MEDICINE provides a comprehensive approach to the evaluation and management of patients with diseases of the respiratory and pulmonary vascular systems. A full range of diagnostic procedures are available including pulmonary function testing, allergen and aspirin challenge testing, exercise tolerance testing, bronchoscopy and transbronchial lung biopsy. The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program prepares patients for thoracic surgery and provides post-surgical support, and is also available to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Division members provide medical leadership to an active lung transplantation program and work closely with members of the Thoracic Surgery Team. Additionally, members of the staff have special interests in sleep apnea, interstitial lung diseases, lung disease in pregnancy, and the molecular basis of airway diseases.
Comprehensive care of critically ill patients is provided in the BWH Medical Intensive Care Unit by members of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division. Division physicians have special expertise in ventilator management and are developing critical pathways to reduce the length of stay in the ICU.
