The Center for Surgery and Public Health has amassed an inter-disciplinary team approach to studying surgical problems through the prism of health services research. With representatives from multiple surgical specialties and allied health and academic disciplines, CSPH offers surgical residents and graduate students with an interest in this type of research a variety of educational opportunities and benefits including:
- Helping residents locate and secure funding for their MPH
- Clinical research roundtable discussions
- Bio-statistical resources and support to help navigate through research projects
- Internal critique board to evaluate manuscripts before being sent to journals
- Mentorship and career planning

Arthur Tracy Cabot Fellowship
The Brigham and Women’s Hospital Center for Surgery and Public Health has developed a two year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Surgical Health Services Research for physicians who wish to develop the skills necessary to become independent researchers in the areas of:
- Reducing Racial and Socio-Economic Disparities in Surgical Care
- Reducing Complications and Deaths in Surgery
- Understanding and Measuring Success and Failure in Surgery
- Improving Value and Cost Effectiveness in Surgical Care
- Improving Surgical Education

NEW! Monthly Works-in-Progress Meetings
The Center for Surgery and Public Health has instituted monthly WIP meetings for fellows and trainees to present their work to faculty members for feedback. Each month two fellows will present their work to the group. The meetings will be held on the first Friday of the month at 4 pm in Conference Room G at One Brigham Circle on the 4th floor. Everyone is welcome to attend. The dates for the remainder of the year are below.
June 18: Luke Funk, MD, will be giving a presentation entitled "The Relationship Between Hospital Characteristics and Esophagectomy Outcomes - Moving Beyond Volume" (Dr. Atul Gawande, Principle Investigator) and Marcus Semel, MD, will be presenting his work entitled, "Surgery in the Elderly: The Last Year of Life" (Dr. Atul Gawande, Principle Investigator).
July 2: Antonia Henry, MD, will be giving a presentation entitled "Root Causes of Disparities in Vascular Care" (Dr. Louis Nguyen, Principle Investigator) and Sarah Billmeier, MD, will be presenting her work entitled "Predictors of Limited Resection in Early Stage Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A CanCORS Database Project" (Dr. Selwyn Rogers, Principle Investigator, Drs. Michael Jaklitsch and John Ayanian, Collaborators).
