The department’s research portfolio consists of 602 NIH research grants and contracts, 17 NIH institutional training grants, 125 individual training grants, 32 industry sponsored research grants, 233 industry sponsored clinical trials, and 205 foundation awards.
The department has a strong record of success in obtaining research funding. Of the 5,164 applications for funding that faculty within the department have submitted over the last three years, 2,279 were approved—a 44% success rate. Despite this success, however, the trend is unlikely to continue, since NIH funding levels are expected to continue to decrease over the next few years.
