In FY 2008, BWH received $441 million in research support. This represents about 25% of the total BWH budget. - Of the $441 million, approximately 59% comes from the NIH. The balance of research support comes from Industry (13%), non-NIH federal funds (1%) and other sources (27%).
- Between FY 1998 and FY 2008, BWH research support has averaged a 10% annual growth rate from $178 million in 1998 to $441 million presently.
- BWH research is conducted in over 600,000 square feet of space located in the Longwood Medical Area, on Landsdowne Street in Cambridge and in surrounding areas.
- BWH has over 3,200 researchers, including nearly 1,000 research fellows.
- Of the funds dedicated to research, onsite research programs account for 72%, clinical trials 7%, training 7%, offsite research programs 11% and other activities 3%.
- In FY 2008, BWH research represented 42% of all research dollars at Partners Healthcare System.
- For more than a decade, Massachusetts General Hospital and BWH rank one and two, respectively, for the most NIH funding for independent hospitals in the US.
All departments at BWH have active basic, translational and clinical research programs that compliment the Hospital’s excellent clinical care and outstanding educational and training programs.
