The BWH Department of Medicine, the BWH Division of Genetics and the HMS-PHS Center for Genetics and Genomics (HPCGG) recently established a new joint residency program in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics that is now approved by both the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) and the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). This new Residency in Genetic Medicine builds upon existing strengths of both the three year BWH Internal Medicine Residency Program, and the two year Harvard Medical School Genetics Training Program, a fellowship program supported by the HPCGG that involves training in Medical Genetics at several Harvard-affiliated hospitals, including BWH, MGH, DFCI, and Children’s Hospital.

Goals
A major challenge raised by the Human Genome Project is how to translate its extraordinary information content into health benefits. A key impediment to achieving this goal relates to the shortage of physicians who are well trained in both Medicine and Genetics. The BWH Residency in Genetic Medicine and the closely related Genetics Track, both components of the BWH Internal Medicine Residency Program, aim to address this problem by training carefully selected BWH Internal Medicine housestaff in both Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics. The primary goal of these two new Programs is to train physicians and physician-scientists who will become leaders in Genetic Medicine, and who will catalyze the introduction of genetics into patient care.
BWH Residency in Genetic Medicine
Key features of the new BWH Residency in Genetic Medicine include the direct integration of Genetics training into the Internal Medicine residency years, an increased emphasis on Genetic diseases of direct interest to internists, and flexibility during the last two years so that residents may pursue additional electives or post-doctoral research in the Genetic basis of disease. During PGY2 and 3, residents pursue alternating 3 month blocks of Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics rotations. At the end of the five-year Program, residents become Board Eligible in both Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics, and may have completed up to two years of post-doctoral research training.
BWH Internal Medicine Residency Genetics Track
Many residents may wish to pursue medical sub-specialty training in areas other than Medical Genetics, but nonetheless wish to acquire an increased knowledge of the Genetics relevant to Internal Medicine and to their anticipated area of sub-specialization. The Genetics Track exists within the three-year BWH Internal Medicine Residency Program and employs many of the same Genetics rotations as the Residency in Genetic Medicine, but does not incur a requirement for additional training beyond PGY3.
