| | Field Site Narratives | | Mofao Mapoloko's Story Jonas Rigodon, MD "August 2006 and Mofao Mapoloko was 21 years old and living in Maseru. She was 8 months pregnant and had just started to suffer from fever and chest pains. She didn’t go to the hospital because she didn’t believe it would be a very serious problem and she couldn’t afford to pay to see the doctor or buy the medicines. She didn’t get better. One month later her baby was born and lived only a single week." |

| Lessons in Justicia: Daniel Palazuelos, MD, writes about his experiences conducting research on attitudes towards death in Mexico.
"Not knowing who to believe, what to feel, having no way to confirm or disprove the facts, I stomped out into the hallway, looking for answers...in classic New Yorker fashion, I was prepared to use forceful language, solid body posture, abrupt interruptions and a staunch demeanor to get my way-- or was it his way?"
| Walking to See the Doctor Evan Lyon, MD
"...Many patients come to clinic dressed in their Sunday best. I have examined hundreds of little girls in bright taffeta dresses, some with matching patent leather shoes kept clean by walking barefoot through the mud to our little clinic-oasis of white ceramic tiles. Woman wear hats. Men that have them, wear ties. And despite the fact that they come with dozens of complaints, I can see that they are celebrating too. They are seeing the doctor..."
| New Home in Cite Silence, Hinche, Haiti Evan Lyon, MD
"The Zanmi Lasante clinic in Hinche is experiencing what we call a ‘first pass’ phenomena in terms of HIV and TB patients. Prior to ZL’s rehabilitation of the grand but empty Hopital St. Therese, there was no capacity to diagnose or treat HIV. There was only very poor care for tuberculosis. Both TB and HIV are relatively common among the rural poor but now – and until we catch up to years and years of neglect – we are seeing even greater numbers of patients. These patients represent a backlog of the sick who survived a complete lack of accessible medical care."

| Building a Community: Sonya Shin, MD, MPH by Rachel Knott
"Shin entered Harvard Medical School in 1993...A mere three years later, she became one of the first leaders of a community-based project to deliver world-class care to some of the sickest and poorest tuberculosis patients in the world."
| A Profile of Evan Lyon, MD
"For the past eight years, Dr. Evan Lyon’s commute has been a long one—from Boston to Haiti. "
| Breaking Down Barriers: A Profile of Michael Rich, MD, MPH by Rachel Knott
"You’ll be driving through Lima and see hill after hill covered with shacks. You know they don’t have running water, and there’s only one little electrical wire for the whole region, and you wonder, 'what is ever going to change this?'... It’s an incredible privilege to feel that your work has meaning."
| An Interview with Howard Hiatt, MD
"Now more than ever, it’s important for the US to demonstrate to the world our compassion and support for resource-poor communities... The fact that there are “branches” of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Haiti, Siberia and Peru as well as in Boston’s inner city presents a message that is, of course, far more explicit than our simply saying we care about these problems."
| An Interview with Jennifer Furin, MD, PhD
"Medicine is very powerful. You have the opportunity to save someone’s life or not and to bring that opportunity to people who don’t expect it, who have never seen that kind of power, is very satisfying."
| An Interview with David Walton, MD
"I knew that if I wanted in fact to be an advocate for the poor that I needed more tools at my disposal and a broader perspective, a broader view of options for the poor, and a more global sense of advocacy... The challenges we face are central to our mission, which is redefining academic medicine so that medical centers can create a pathway for people to be more involved in global health."
