Phyllis Jen, MD, has been a primary care physician in the Brigham Internal Medicine Associates (BIMA) at the BWH since 1976. Since 1982, she has served as the Medical Director of BIMA, a large primary care practice on the main Brigham campus, which is also the primary site for internal medicine ambulatory training for residents.
She has a major teaching role in the hospital both in the inpatient and outpatient settings, and has won teaching awards from the housestaff for teaching and mentoring. Dr Jen serves in several leadership roles in the hospital. Between 1996-1999, she was an officer of the Medical Staff, and in 1997-8 she served as Chair. She has been active in initiatives to enhance and maintain care for the underserved population that are cared for by BWH. Partly for these efforts, she received the Brigham Physician Organization’s Community Service Award in 2004. From 2003-06, she served as a member of the Partners Board of Trustees. In September, 2006, she received the PCHI Samuel Thier, MD Physician Leadership Award. Outside of her hospital roles, since 1999, she has been Editor in Chief of the online version of the Harvard University Family Health Guide, an online health website for the public, with monthly updates of new medical information.
She is the clinical leader of the BWH volunteerism program, working with the Indian Health Service. Brigham physicians of all specialties volunteer their time, expertise to provide health care to Native Americans (primarily Navajo) in New Mexico, as well provide educational sessions for the staff.
