Sara Selig, MD volunteered as a public health advocate at the Maternal and Child Health Clinic in Zimbabwe in 1998. It was here that she became interested in securing better healthcare options for underserved populations throughout the world and synchronizing global policies with local realities. Just prior to medical school, her interest turned to research as she secured a position at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) not only performing HIV research but also treating patients with HIV. After her third year of medical school, Dr. Selig was accepted as a Fogarty Ellison Fellow in Nairobi, Kenya where she worked with patients as part of a clinical research team caring for HIV infected children and their families. While in Kenya, Dr. Selig helped to establish a psychosocial program for HIV infected children and their caregivers at Kenyatta National Hospital that would address the issues of children not sticking to their HIV treatment regimens. Dr. Selig’s ultimate goal is to pursue a career where she is able to translate significant research into meaningful policy.
Dr. Selig earned her BA in Neuroscience, Biology and Judaic & Near Eastern Studies from Oberlin College in 1999 and her MD from The University of Colorado School of Medicine in 2007. Her research interest includes the immune responses to childhood vaccines among HIV infected Kenyan children pre and post exposure to highly active antiretroviral therapy.
