Research Summary
My research involves four areas:
Delirium and Sedation in ICU, with special emphasis on post-surgical patient population: Current studies are focused on novel treatment choices for acute agitational delirium in critically ill surgical patients; studying the relationship of narcotics in epidural analgesia with delirium in thoracic surgery patients; implementation, education, practice and evaluation of sedation scale/delirium assessment tool in the ICU; electronic intervention to improve compliance with the sedation/delirium treatment guidelines to improve quality of care and safety for improved outcomes.
Communication among ICU patient families and the care providers; ethical issues involving decision-making, end-of-life/palliative care: Current projects involve assessing barriers to good communication with ICU patient families/family meetings; studying the sedation for comfort measures patients at end-of-life, assessment of ethical dilemmas of critical care fellows and impacts of intervention.
DVT/VTE/PE in surgical critically ill patients: Current projects focus on identification of risk of factors for and incidence of upper extremity DVT, treatment preferences and complications of treatment; incidence of VTE overall and recurrence to design interventional clinical trials.
Education, training and use of new devices and validated tools, new studies to improve patient outcomes in critically ill surgical patients: Current project focuses on using a computerized stethoscope to develop computerized algorithms to be able to monitor respiratory status of ICU patients in real time; implementation, education, practice and evaluation of sedation scale/delirium assessment tool in the ICU; studying the treatment of acute hypertension; electronic intervention to improve compliance with the sedation/delirium treatment guidelines to improve quality of care and safety for improved outcomes; efforts to do the same for the general floor patients.
