Does the fellowship apply to global health projects?
No, it does not. The fellowship is awarded to health care professionals who are interested in local or state community health research or other community clinical care initiatives that address local critical and emerging health care needs.
Do I have to be a Brigham and Women's Hospital employee to be eligible to apply?
Yes, applicants must be BWH employees.
Do I need to have a BWH mentor in order to apply?
You do not need to have a mentor in place at the time of your submission. However, if your application is successful, you are required to identify and be mentored by a senior BWH administrator or clinician.
What type of projects are you looking for? Are there examples of past fellowship projects?
- Community health research studying the impact of chronic psychological stress on race and ethnic inequities in cardiovascular disease, as well as examining the impact of state and national health policy on race and ethnic inequities in health.
- Examining racial and ethnic inequities in the treatment and clinical outcomes of chronic diseases.
- Building infrastructure at BWH in community-based participatory research interventions.
- Advancing health and chronic disease prevention in Boston communities; increasing community's understanding of the social determinants of health, teaching the fundamentals of health & wellness, and providing experiential learning opportunities in healthy food choices, physical activity, stress management, and other domains of healthy living.
- Complete a mixed-methods examination of disparities in timely access to surgical care at Brigham and Women's and the greater Boston community; improving access to surgical care for the greater Boston community, focusing on communities of color.
At what stage in their careers are award recipients?
On average, awardees have been early career faculty, although some experience in community health and/or health equity is preferred.
Will I have to complete an interview as part of the application process?
Finalists will be asked to meet with members of the fellowship selection committee, which is composed of representatives of community health and health equity across BWH and community partners.
The application states that the award provides up to $90,000 per year for salary support and fringe. Do you require a budget/justification for the amount of salary support requested?
We do not require a budget justification for salary and fringe support as part of the application process. If awarded, we will work with your department administrator to determine salary allocation based on your earnings distribution.
Can the Nesson Fellowship be used to cover other expenses beyond salary and fringe support?
If the recipient chooses, a portion of the fellowship award may be applied to cover project expenses (such as other support/administrative costs) outside of salary and fringe. Individuals who wish to apply a portion of the fellowship award to expenses beyond their own salary and fringe are required to submit a brief budget narrative describing the use of the funds.
