Bernard Jones, EdM, Vice President, Primary & Value-Based Care, Public Policy, and Administrative Operations

Bernard “Bernie” Jones is the vice president, Primary & Value-Based Care, Public Policy and Administrative Operations. He oversees a newly aligned portfolio focused on delivering high-quality, affordable care to our patients in the primary and community-based care settings across the Brigham. He also leads the Brigham’s Value-Based Care portfolio, overseeing a cross-functional team that develops and implements programs designed to meet the value-based care goals of the organization and the system, including Medicare and Medicaid ACO and commercial risk- based contract performance on total medical expense and quality, strategy, and trend targets, inclusive of primary care and specialty areas. Both areas of responsibility are supported and advanced by the public policy and advocacy initiatives he leads, in areas that include housing insecurity and homelessness, food insecurity, and climate change and sustainability, among others. His portfolio includes 16 clinical sites; more than 700 physicians, nurses, and staff; approximately 235,000 covered lives; and an overall operating budget of more than $165 million, along with institutional responsibility for a risk performance opportunity of approximately $45 million. Additionally, he acts as the local leader responsible for all government relations and public policy activity and supports the Office of the EVP/COO with some of the highest priority initiatives at the Brigham and across Mass General Brigham to help reach our local and system-wide goals. Jones’ career has been dedicated to serving large, complex, mission-driven organizations.

Prior to joining the Brigham, he served as the deputy chief of staff to the University of California president, who was responsible for leading a university system that included 10 campuses, five academic medical centers, three affiliated national laboratories and a statewide agriculture and natural resources program. Earlier in his career, he served as a management consultant, with a practice focused on governance and leadership at academic medical centers and universities nationally. He earned a master’s degree in higher education administration, policy and research from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a bachelor’s degree in English from Haverford College.
